We're happy the Colorado sun is back out and the snow is finally melting away. SUNI is busy planning out the 2023 calendar. Our first Sipper of the year is Feb 21st so mark your calendars. We will also have our annual meeting and elections in April. More details on March newsletter.
We've added new programming with our Land Use coffee hours to discuss development in the neighborhood and working on a new website rolling out this May. So please excuse our current website while we work on the new one.
To keep up to date on what is going on, please follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Of course we couldn't do any of this without the help of volunteers. We are currently in need of someone to help with our social media (FB and Insta). We also have open board positions to fill. If you are interested in helping one of our committees and/or interested in joining, please email us! info@sunnysidedenver.org |

Learn more on the project webpage. |
Shared Streets Meeting and Survey |
In 2020 and 2021, Denver’s Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) established temporary Shared Streets to create safe and comfortable spaces for residents to walk, bike, roll, and play. These streets used short-term traffic calming methods to reduce vehicle trips and speeds which resulted in a significant increase in people walking and biking on these corridors.
On February 16th from 5:30-7:00 pm, DOTI will host their second virtual meeting. They will provide program updates and discuss which streets you think would be a great shared street. Register to attend via Zoom. Can’t attend? Share your thoughts on where you want to see shared streets in the future by dropping pins on an interactive map. |
Cherry Creek Trail Closure |
The Cherry Creek Trail will be closed for approximately 4-6 months (December 12, 2022 - June 2023) while the Larimer Street bridge is reconstructed, along with other streetscaping enhancements as part of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure's Connecting Auraria project. Trail users will be routed to the south side of the trail at the Downtown Playground and Creekfront Park via Wynkoop, Market, and 14th Streets. Download the trail detour map here. Vehicle and other pedestrian detours will also be in place; everyone in the area should plan for extra travel time. Find more details on the project webpage and digital flyer. For all trail detours visit www.denvergov.org/traildetours. |
"Viva Streets Denver" Turns Main Thoroughfares into Community Bike Routes and Gathering Spaces |
Ever dream about a leisurely bicycle ride down the middle of Broadway?! If so, you’ll be excited to hear that on four Sundays in the spring and summer of 2023, everyone is invited to bicycle, walk and gather on two of the city’s premiere streets, without the typically-present traffic.
The Downtown Denver Partnership and City and County of Denver are working together to close about 3.5 miles of Broadway and Welton St, between Alameda Ave and Five Points, to cars from 8 am to 2 pm on the following Sundays: The event is called ¡Viva! Streets Denver.
The idea to regularly close streets to cars comes from Latin America, with the first “ciclovía” (Spanish for “bikeway”) held in Bogota, Colombia in 1974. Denver hopes its mile-high interpretation of that fun event will build community and activate businesses located along and around the route.
During the ¡Viva! Streets Denver events, cars will be able to cross Broadway and Welton on high-traffic roads like Colfax and Speer, but won’t be able to turn onto the car-free streets until the event is over at 2 pm each day. The Downtown Denver Partnership will be looking for volunteers and community groups who want to pitch in. Sign up here, to stay in the know. |
Runs and walks happen all year round, providing fun and healthy activities for people throughout our city. Runs can have significant impacts on Denver communities, so whether you want to join in or avoid the traffic, check out the local run info below. View this online calendar for additional Denver events. |

Strategic Transportation Plan |
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is excited to announce the release of the draft of its strategic transportation plan, Denver Moves Everyone (DME) 2050. This citywide plan aligns future investments in Denver’s transportation system with the collective goals and vision of Denverites. Over the past two years, DOTI has engaged with thousands of community members in each of Denver’s 78 neighborhoods to develop DME. With a focus on equity, the plan uses data and community feedback to lay out a strategy to address current transportation challenges and meet future needs. DME provides program and policy recommendations to prioritize capital transportation improvements in the near-, mid-, and long-term resulting in increased safety, more connected and efficient travel options, reduced emissions, and greener streets.
DOTI invites you to view the draft at DenverMovesEveryone.com, where you can also learn more about each phase of public input that shaped the plan through a virtual open house. The draft plan will be available for a 30-day review until February 25th. DOTI will refine the draft based on public feedback prior to releasing the final plan. |
